Audience Research

I needed to get some research from my target audience to see exactly what it was that they liked. Upon showing people my newspaper I devised some questions to find out what my intended audience think about my work.
These questions were:

1) Which shops do you think my newspaper would be distributed in?
2) Which elements in my newspaper appeal to you personally?
3) What are your overall views on my newspaper as a brand?

1) My audience mostly thought that my paper would be distributed in newsagents and large supermarkets like Waitrose. They also thought that my paper might be distributed by booksellers and in garages.

2) The stories about sport and the story about the nightclub seemed to appeal to my audience most, along with the "smaller articles about local people". Somebody also said that the front page headlines were done well and that the stories were "interesting and relevant".

3) When asked on their overall views on my newspaper, some people said that the headline font was a bit "weird" and that my paper was "too blue", but altogether the reviews were pretty good, with my paper being described as "decent", "interesting" and "fresh and gritty".

Evaluation

At first I definitely was not looking forward to having to make the evaluation for my project. It seemed like a difficult task that was going to take a long time to complete.
Although, after starting it and getting into the right mood, I shot my whole evaluation in one day. I  will still probably need to replace some parts with re-shot scenes, but I am still happy that I have managed to get all of the raw footage taken care of.
There is also a lot of editing to be done to make sure that the ICT area of the evaluation is up to scratch, and this will mostly involve adding text and images to the shot as I am speaking.

Inside page with latest pictures

Final few pictures for the paper...

When I was producing my paper, there were a few areas for which I had not yet had an image. Because of this, when the time came around for me to start making the radio advert and more recently the poster, it left me to move on from the newspaper whilst leaving these blank areas. I have now filled the void and now every area in my paper that should have an image does in fact have an image.
For example, one of my main stories, the one about Chris Rodgers, the young football player, did not have a picture to accompany the story. I have now added an image and I will upload the picture of what my inside page currently looks like shortly.
Another example would be with one of the adverts on my inside page, the one about the fictional CD shop in Nailsea. For this advert, I think it looked alright before, but I wanted to make it a bit more exciting and probably more realistic. To do this, I got many of my own CD's and organised them on my table at home and took some pictures of them. I then put this picture behind the text on my advert. This is the picture that I took of my CD's on the right. I tried not to use any brightly coloured CD cases as I didn't want the picture to overpower the text, as it is supposed to just be used as a background.

Poster

I started to create the poster for my newspaper, as can be seen from the blog post directly below this one.
I found it quite difficult at first to produce my poster, as I did with my radio advert, purely because there aren't actually many adverts or posters for newspapers in the real world. I'm not sure if this is because these kind of things used to be popular and are not anymore, or if the task was purposely set to be difficult, but as opposed to the actual paper itself, there are not actually any examples that I can use to base my ancillary tasks on.
I used InDesign to make my poster, which is the same program that I used to make my actual newspaper. I used this program as I have become very familiar with it recently due to making my newspaper. Because of this, I found it very simple to create the basic idea of my poster, which is what I have done so far.
The main focus of my poster is on the competition that is earlier mentioned on the front page of my newspaper.

Second Ancillary Task - Poster

Florence & The Machine - Dog Days

The other potential track that I would use in the background of my radio advert is 'Dog Days' by Florence & The Machine.
I want to use this track because it is fairly recent, so it would be recognisable to my target audience.
In general, this genre of music is probably the most inoffensive that you could get, which makes it ideal to be used in a radio advert.
Florence Welch's voice has an older feel to it, probably because she is one of the few artists than can genuinely sing in the modern music industry, with or without background music, and DEFINITELY without autotune!
There is never too much going on in Florence's songs, as the instruments are harmonised properly and the overall song doesn't sound too crowded to the listener. Because of this, I believe that it will make a good background for my advert, as I am sure that the music won't overpower my speech.
Another common trait that most of her songs share is that they all tend to build from nothing at the beginning to a real song at the end with all instruments working together. This gives the effect that the song is somewhat growing, and it takes the listener on a small journey. My radio advert will not last for the entirety of the song, which lasts 4 minutes, 10 seconds. This although, is not a bad thing for my advert, as it means that the standard big climactic ending will not have to be included. I see this as a positive because I think that the climax with Florence's singing would totally overpower my speech and would harm the equilibrium of my advert.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

I chose to use this song as my background music for a number of reasons:
Firstly, it is quite a recent song, only about a year old, so it will appeal to the audience of younger adults that I am trying to get to.
Also, the song was a relatively big hit and was well-known as it reached number 2 in the UK Chart, so I hope that people will remember my radio advert when they hear it.
The track has an old-school feel to it with the dominant piano tune, so it may also appeal to the slightly older generation that tend to read the most newspapers.

Radio Advert

Recently I have been creating my radio advert for the ancillary task for my full project.
As with most new programmes, it initially took me a fair amount of time to get used to it. Although, after learning the basics around GarageBand, I started to find it quite easy to start making my advert, especially after I found the people that I wanted to use as speakers, as it is as simple as just speaking and recording at first.
At the beginning I thought that I would not enjoy the radio advert task at all, but I have actually ended up enjoying it and finding it quite fun.
As well as having speech in my advert, I also need effects, as well as background music. For effects, I used a website named SoundBible, which I have been told is reliable by my teacher, and it is a website that enables people to both upload and download a various amount of effects from a vast library. Also, it is extremely simple to use this website, as it downloads the file in MP3 format, ready to use straight away in iTunes, and then ready to be imported into GarageBand to be incorporated into my advert.
As for the background music, I have not yet fully decided on which track I will use. I have had a few preliminary ideas, the main one being Aloe Blacc's 'I Need A Dollar', as I think the beat would make for a good background. One problem I have encountered although, is that the intro to the song only lasts for approximately 15 seconds before the singing comes in. Because of the singing, it hinders the ability to hear me speaking about my newspaper. To combat this, my idea was to search for an instrumental version of this track, in hope that it will stay as just background music, and not overpower the actual purpose of the advert.

Ancillary Tasks

For our overall project, as well as completing the main newspaper, we have to complete two ancillary tasks, for me this will entail creating a radio advert and a poster both for my Bristol Chronicle.
At the moment, I am beginning to create my radio advert. This has proven to be quite difficult so far because I have found it very hard to find existing examples of real radio adverts for newspapers. I think this is because real companies tend not to use the radio to promote their newspapers. Another reason as to why I am finding this task quite difficult to create is because I need to use a programme on the Apple Mac called GarageBand to record the advert. I haven't used this particular programme before so I am new to it and just getting the hang of it.

Inside Page with only a few more changes before it's ready for first draft

First Draft For My Front Page

My Last Advert

My last advert is for a CD store in Nailsea. I tried to create the advert relating to the context of the fictional business, such as what the business is and where it is. By this I mean that I tried to purposely not make the advert to in depth and tried to make it look like the creators did not put too much money behind it as at the end of the day, it is just a small shop on the Nailsea where you can buy and sell CD's.

Made my last advert...

Nearly there...

Pretty much got to the point where the first draft of my magazine is completely done.
All I have to do now is make another advert for my inside page & take a picture for one of the main stories (the one about the young footballer), the latter of which should potentially be quite simple as I play football quite regularly, so I should be able to use one of my friends as a model.

My Advert

The pictures below this post on my blog are the adverts that I will include in my newspaper.
I created all of the adverts myself from scratch, taking all of the pictures myself, some of which I used a helpful effect on my cameraphone which gives the picture a older-looking effect, and a more professional looking effect all-round.

The advert I created from scratch

My inside page after remodelling

I totally changed the layout of my inside page, the most notable difference being the involvement of the 5-column-system that I have seen many times and is used in most papers. I also managed to make more space on the page, which means that I am able to fit in more pictures, and they will be a lot bigger as well. This fits in well with the audience research that I did a while back which told me that I will want an even mix between text and pictures on my page. Because of this, I think my newly-styled inside page fits my desired specification a lot better than my old inside page layout.

My front page after remodelling

I made a few changes to my front page to make sure that it resembled more of a standard real newspaper.
Firstly, I added a column system to the stories to make the layout look more realistic. I also changed the font of the headlines to make most of them the same, instead of the front page I had before with about 6 different headline fonts, which made the page look quite novice.

9/30/2011

Changing the whole newspaper :/

Unfortunately I have been notified now (at this quite late stage before our first draft is due in) that my layout is quite wrong and that I should change it.
Firstly, my font is too big and needs to be smaller. I didn't realise this initially as I was working on A3 size paper so I thought it'd be alright, although, I have been told to change the text from size 17 down to about 12 or 13, which is a pretty drastic change.

9/13/2011

Using the Macs

I have encountered a few problems while using the Apple Macs so far.
Firstly, it is hard to deal with pictures that have been put on the page, especially when it comes to resizing them and moving them around. This is annoying, but hasn't got in my way too much yet, but it could potentially be a problem when the time comes for me to input all of my own pictures.
Secondly, it's quite difficult to get things from the Mac onto Blogger, which I need to do because I need to document what I am doing and how my newspaper is being made. I found this problem when I was trying to export my front page from InDesign to Blogger so I could talk about how I was making it. The problem is, the file is not in the right format so Blogger will not accept it. Secondly, I tried to do what I would do on a PC and I tried to printscreen my front page. After going through the trouble of opening a special "Grab" application, it turns out that this again is not in the desired format. In the end, I copied every element of my front page and pasted in into a PhotoShop document, and this did save in the right format. I'm happy that I found out how to make this work, but it's quite annoying to think that I will have to follow this procedure every time that I want to post my newspaper on Blogger.
The other problem I have found is that it is quite difficult to get the right kind of bold font to use, as in the font that is commonly used in newspapers. Although, this was easy to solve as I have encountered in before in AS Media when we were using the Macs. So to get around this problem, I just replicate the text that I want in bold and layer the two on top of each other but slightly overlapped, which gives it the bold effect.

Making my front page

This is my front page for The Bristol Chronicle while it's still being made. I have used the same layout that I designed a few weeks ago and posted on my blog, so that gave me a headstart.
Also, because I wrote the text for my front page a few weeks ago as well and posted it on my blog, it meant I could just copy and paste it from my blog straight onot my fresh InDesign page, which again gave me a headstart.
As I have not taken my pictures yet, I have temporarily used relative pictures form the internet to show which pictures will go where.
I have also not made my adverts yet, which I will have to make from scratch, so there are still a few black boxes on my page.

Double Page Spread

This is the first plan for the double page spread of my newspaper.
At the moment, my plan is to use the space in the middle of the page as the nightclub story, and probably the left-hand side for the McDonalds story and the right-hand side for the local footballer story.
The plan shows that the double page spread is quite evenly shared by both text and pictures, which I chose to do because it relates to one of the questions on my questionnaire and that is what my target audience wanted.
I also plan to have a medium-sized advert in the bottom-right corner of my page, as this is something that most newspapers incorporate, both local and national. Although, these newspapers use adverts as it is another form of revenue alongside the money that they gather from sales, whereas I do not need the adverts for this. Although, I will use adverts because I have taken influences from all these other corporations, and also because if my newspaper were to be real, it would also rely on this as a big percentage of its revenue.

9/06/2011

Other Story

The other story that I am thinking about including in my newspaper is the one about a local boy that had his football career ended after a shock injury. This story will go down the side of the page as it is about someone local and also because there is not too much that I could say about it and it wouldn't fill up a whole central slot in the paper.

Pictures

For the pictures of buildings and locations, I will probably have to go to Bristol to take them, as Portishead will most likely not offer what I am looking for in the form of run down buildings for stories such as the night club one.
Although, for the McDonalds story, I can take pictures of the local restaurant, as that's where the fictional story is set.
Some of the stories also require pictures of people, so I will take pictures of my friends to use as they will not mind posing for mugshots or whatever else I might need.

9/05/2011

Other Story

Two Portishead men on the run after seriously injuring a group of youths in the local McDonalds.
The fight apparently ensued after one of the men approached a teenager, asking if he could borrow some money. The teen refused, and the mindless yobs beat him and his friends up, stealing everything of worth that was on them, including an iPhone, a wallet and some limited edition Nike Air Max trainers.
The men are believed to be 18 years old and have been spotted racing around the town in a black Vauxhall Corsa, with a rear spoiler and tinted blacked-out windows.
The McDonalds restaurant, that has recently undergone renovation, also sustained some serious damage, with many of the tables and chairs broken and a smashed window, after one of the youths was reportedly thrown through it, according to the manager.
These criminals are highly dangerous, so it is imperative that you do not approach them yourself.
If you see either of these men (PICTURE OF BOTH MEN), then do not hesitate to contact the police.

Main Story

A popular nightclub in the Bristol City Centre has been temporarily revoked of their alcohol license for the second time in just 5 months after accusations have arisen about drug deals taking place on the premises.
A Bristol club by the name of Pure on the corner of Park Street has had their license to sell alcohol taken away from them for the time being after a number of sources have gone to the police, claiming that drug deals are frequently occurring inside and outside the club.
It would be bad news for the owners of the club if these accusations are proven to be true, as it has only been 5 months since the club last had their license revoked for selling alcohol to people that were underage. This would mean that it would be highly likely that the club would lose the rights to sell alcohol indefinitely, and consequently would have to shut down. The owners of Pure would also get a hefty fine, and maybe even see some jailtime.
This situation is very similar to the one that was seen at Gloucester's 'Carnage' event last year, where two youths were killed after taking drugs that they were sold on the night. Since then, nightclub security has been extremely tight on ages of customers, and even tighter on the kind of things that these customers are taking inside the clubs. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Pure, here in our very own Bristol, as according to most youths, it is "notorious for drug dealers and addicts", but "the owners don't even care because they're still getting paid". It has been heard that it is very easy for people under 18 to get their way into this club, with "some bouncers not even checking [our] fake ID".
The local police have been looking into the case since the first infringement occurred, but it has appeared that nothing has really come to light yet. So if you know anything in connection to these events, please call the police.

Stories for my newspaper

The story I have chosen to use as the main story for my newspaper is the one about the nightclub that got shut down after a drugs raid. For the stories images, I will go into Bristol and take pictures of an abandoned building to use as the main picture on the cover.

Layout

I drew out a plan for the layout that I want my final newspaper to look like. It was only a rough draft that I made on Microsoft Publisher, so I did not include pictures or text, but I made it just to show an outline of where I want everything to be positioned on my front page. This is my layout so far:

For the layout of my newspaper, I used some conventions that I have seen apparent in established newspapers. For example, I incorporated adverts across the top of the page, which I know has been done regularly by newspapers that I have studied, such as The Evening Post. Other features that I used were using bold font for the first few lines of a paragraph, and adding the writer's name and e-mail address after their story for readers to get in contact.

I also looked at the results from my questionnaire, and concluded that most of my potential readers would prefer more text than pictures, even if only slightly, so I made this happen on my front page. Also from my questionnaire, I found out that most of my consumers prefer adverts that include some sort of token or vouchers, so I tailored my front page to involve this, except I haven't quite decided which kind of advert it will be yet. Whatever advert I decide to have in the end, I will have to create it myself from scratch as I am not allowed to use any pictures that I haven't taken myself.

Potential Stories For My Newspaper

These are some of the stories that I think I could include in my local newspaper:

- Shootings at St. Pauls Carnival
- Nightclub shuts down after drugs raid
- Boy cycles to Newquay for charity
- School Sports Day raises £5,000
- Boy wonder's career over after shock injury
Riots in Stokes Croft over new Tesco Express
- Boy gets selected for London 2012 Olympic team
- Opening of the Open Air gets off with a splash
- Notorious Portishead crack dealer gets shut down
-

Potential Adverts for my Newspaper
These are some of the adverts that I think I could include in my local newspaper:

- McDonald's/ Burger King etc. with tear-out voucher
- Small fictional business
- Advert for my own newspaper, maybe collect 3 or 4 tokens to get one free?

7/11/2011

Primary Research

I composed a questionnaire to try to find out aspects about my intended audience.

Some of the things I found out were:
- that my audience are mostly above the age of 17 but below the age of 50 (but I pretty much knew this already)

- that local newspapers were quite popular, with most people answering the 'which paper(s) do you read' question with The Evening Post. The Times was the most frequently answered reply, although you expect something like this as it's a national paper compared to a regional newspaper like 'The Mercury' or maybe something even smaller like 'Gordano Living'.

- that when asked about which kind of adverts they prefer in a local newspaper, most people tend to like adverts that involve some sort of token that enables them to either buy something or get it at a reduced price. People also like adverts for small local businesses rather than for big businesses as it gives the smaller businesses a chance to get noticed by potential customers, as a lot of people from the nearby area tend to read their local papers.
Here's some examples of big businesses using voucher-style adverts to attract people:

Here's an example of a smaller business that would use their local paper to advertise to their target audience:

- that most people read the paper to be informed on local news and on what's happening in the local area, but also that after that, most people actually read the paper to find out more on sports news, whether it be general news, or sports news refined to their specific area.

- that most people would prefer the front page of their local newspaper to consist of either equal amounts of pictures and text, or for it to have slightly more text than pictures. This is expected as this is standard for most newspapers, both locally and nationally. Although, the text:picture ratio will differ quite substantially depending on which paper you are reading. For example, something like The Sun, which is pretty much a magazine in newspaper form will have a lot of big pictures and not too much text, because of the audience they are trying to appeal to. On the other hand, a newspaper like The Guardian will have a lot more text than pictures, as their readership are usually cleverer and generally have a higher attention span. The Guardian's font will also be smaller in order to fit more text in.

- that most people that I surveyed would prefer to pay less than 20p for a local newspaper, with a few people saying that they would pay between 36p-45p or 46p-60p. No people that I asked said that they would pay any more than 60p for a local newspaper, which is pretty much what I expected, although I had to include the option for 'more than £1' just in case somebody answered with it.
